For Christmas God gave me a sick brother priest, another chance to practice MERCY. How could I not see this as his visitation? He knows I love cooking too. So I am able to give Jesus the gift of caring for his priest by cooking him a healthy meal: ginger, garlic, lemon, tuna, hard boiled egg, and assorted veggies. Then I get the joy of watching him gobble it down heartily, after his body had rejected other food many times, while laughing and recovering nourished by mercy. God is so good!

The Virgin Mary is the door through which God descended to us. First, as a baby in her womb, then lived a life like us in all things but sin. Here in Bicol, where we know her simply as "Ina," or Mother, the door of mercy opened by the Archbishop for the Great Jubilee Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis, is called Porta Mariæ, door of Mary. Walking through Mary God became man that walking that same path we might become like God.

What do those words mean, "They will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint" (Is 40:31)? Well, for me: my job holds a terrifying stress at times that seems almost surreal. Yet, God shows up. He carries not my burden, but carries me, as I carry it. And then even though I am weighted down and crushed, I am mightily supported. So I run yet there is a mysterious strength that buoys up my spirit that God mightily inspires within me. Also I realize that although stress and burden and toil may oppress me, the act of trust in God at that moment is an act of redemption, of spiritual warfare, and yes, victory. #GodAloneIsMyStrength #HeIsMyRefuge

Missionary Priesthood: I found I wasn't going to be satisfied with the normal lot - a wife, kids, house, and job. I wanted more, but was it more stuff, experiences, and money? No. I wanted more fullness, more love. Soon, as anyone discovers, I found out the only way to have more was to give more. I wanted to give my life. Answering the call to priesthood was the beginning, desiring more fruitfulness, more love for more people, even to the ends of the earth as a missionary, and to the ends of humanity serving those in greatest need. The only way the insatiable appetite for love of the human heart is to give every breath, every heartbeat, every ounce of strength, even every drop of blood - one's whole life - over to love. "Whoever loses their life for me will find it" Mt 16:25.

It's not easy to love. It means you have to be responsible, to care for the other person, to place yourself at their service, to feel their pain, accept their worries as your own, to be vulnerable. To love the poor and afflicted means that you share their affliction, you co-miserate, you suffer with them. This why a person will only learn to love unconditionally and wholeheartedly, unless they first permit God to love them wholeheartedly and unconditionally. Once they do this, it simply an overflowing of love, like a cup held under the flow of Niagara Falls.

It's great when people are gifted, when they're smart, funny, strong or beautiful. It's wonderful when priests are gifted, when they're good teachers, preachers, confessors, or Intercessors. "But I will show you still a more excellent way" (1 Cor 12:31). I can have all gifts, be very gifted, but unless I gift myself, unless I have love, "I am nothing" (1 Cor 13:2). I am "gifted." People tell me that all the time, but I consider it all nothing, like flattery or fluff, in fact I can even see some priests or people getting hung up on their gifts, for these are nothing compared to what it is like to love someone, and in so doing to truly and eternally show them God's true face. To be loved is to know God. May we all reveal God in the way we love and serve.
