Today we celebrate the memorial of St Nicholas of Myra, Bishop. He was generous and loved generously. The alms that he gave freely in freeing the captives and slaves of his time is an outgrowth of this kind of love that doesn't expect return. This love was so great it has become an icon of Christmas giving, which is founded on the Gift of the Father, Jesus Christ, whom we could never merit or payback this gift.
Let us pray for courage to open our hearts to this kind of generous love.
